The two scientific papers (which have links below) accurately define the extent and magnitude of both horizontal and vertical ground movement over both high extraction and longwall panels.  This information was gathered in Southern Illinois in the 1980's.  It is noteworthy that in both papers, the researchers had the assistance of a representative from a coal company.  In other words, the coal companies involved had an interest in knowing the extent of the ground movement under either a longwall panel or an area of high-extraction retreat mining.

The information is irrefutable.  The ground moves both horizontally and vertically - AND it moves a lot!!
