The health hazards associated with ingestion of water (Elements) or breathing air (PAH's) are listed in the information below.  Note that under the icon "Toxic Cocktail", the excessive amounts of the substances are listed.  The bottom line in all of this is that exposure to the excess amounts of elements and PAH's in the water and air coming from a coal mine is definitely hazardous to health.  The information presented below came from the U.S. EPA web site.

Antimony    -    Increase in blood cholesterol, decrease in blood sugar

Arsenic    -    Skin damage or problems with circulatory systems.  May have increased risk of getting cancer.

Beryllium    -    Intestinal lesions

Cadmium    -    Kidney damage

Chromium    -    Allergic dermatitis

Copper    -    Short term exposure - gastrointestinal distress; long term exposure - liver or kidney damage.

Cyanide    -    Nerve damage or thyroid problems

Lead    -    Infants and children: Delays in physical or mental development; children could show slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities.  Adults: kidney problems, high blood pressure.

Selenium    -    Hair or fingernail loss; numbness in fingers or toes, circulatory problems.

Thallium    -    Hair loss; changes in blood; kidney, intestine or liver problems.

 

PAH's    -    Red blood cell damage leading to anemia, suppressed immune system
